Mohawk Garland Arthur Sponburgh, 79, of Mohawk passed away on October 13, 2014, in the comfort of his own home and with his loving family by his side, after a second brief courageous battle with Cancer. He was born on August 8, 1935, in Ilion, New York, the son of Frederick and Lepha (Coleman) Sponburgh. He was married to Nina Sponburgh, who predeceased him on September 2, 2014. They were married on April 27, 1957, a marriage that lasted 57 years. They resided in Ilion until 1966 when they moved to Mohawk and built their home, on Creek Rd., where they raised their family. Gar's main vocation was as a tool and die maker at Remington Arms for 33 years, until retiring in 1994. He was active in scouts (Cub Scouts, Weblos and Boy Scouts) for 40 years. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1989 for 32 years of service in Scouting. He was certified as a Lay Servant at his church, Paines Hollow United Methodist, often sharing the pulpit with his son Gregg Sponburgh. He also participated in the Mohawk Reformed Church Vacation Bible School for several years. Gar loved talking with his son Gary about camping and hunting and the trips to the Florida flea markets with his daughter Carin. Gar and Nina loved to travel to Yuma, AZ for the winter months; where he was the leader in organizing fishing derby's for underprivileged children. Both Gar and Nina loved their snowbird friends and trailer club the Leather Stocking J's. He is survived by his sisters Patricia Couchman and Winnifred Kiley; three children; Gary A. Sponburgh (wife Kim), Gregg A. Sponburgh, and Carin J. Hubbard (husband Steve), 6 grandchildren (Kara (husband Shawn), Renae, Kaylee, Ryan, Breanna, and Gabriella), 1 great grandson (Carter) and Nina's sister, Donna M. Poore. A memorial service for Gar will be held on Saturday October 18, 2014 at 3pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. Dr. Roger Klossner and Pastor Peg Donaghy will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from Noon until the time of the funeral. Donations in Gar's memory may be made to the Paines Hollow UMC, 1 Ward St. Ilion, NY 13357.
