Willie and I go back to kindergarten….1947. And he attended my 5th birthday party with Dorothy Combs and Bob Conover. Lifelong friends, we attended Sarah Piper Elem school together only a couple blocks from our homes; we were in Boy Scouts together, and even attended Boy Scout camp – Camp Russell - together in the mid 50s. We kept in touch over the years even as our lives drifted in different directions. He was a good friend to everyone and he will be missed. Keith Wells

I reported aboard America as an awfully dumb sailor in late 1966, and was quickly welcomed by Mack and the rest of the G Division flight deck ordnance crew. Soon we were departing for overseas duty, on what would be my first and only Med cruise, but for these old salts it was their second trip to the Med. Thanks to Mack and the others, I quickly learned my way around. Mack was a unique friend and leader for someone as green as I was. He was special! All too soon, as we returned stateside, several of my saddest days were when many of these original plankowners I knew so well were mustering out, and I still had nearly two years left on my own hitch!
I was too young to realize it in those days, but lifelong friendship were being formed, and in ensuing years there were many memorable reunions, both formal and informal, in Norfolk and Portsmouth, in Indianapolis, and in upstate NY. These special bonds that only ex-servicemen can appreciate, have lasted for decades.
God bless you, Mack! Stand clear of all catwalks and weather decks due to high winds and heavy seas!

I was a classmate of Willy, and we have maintained contact over these many years since I moved away from Frankfort in 1964.He was the source of news, of planning get-togethers and hundreds of incredibly lame jokes.
I was once in Utica, sitting with my very ill aunt, when he appeared at the Masonic Home with a delicious pie he had made. We went outside and ate it, and I remember vividly how much better I felt at a time when I had thought I just could not stand any more. I still have the pie plate and the memory of how caring a person he was!
He was also really, really funny! My husband was once giving a lecture at Cornell about cow reproduction, and Willy was in the audience. Years later, Dave was dreading going to my class reunion, because he thought he would not know anyone. We walked in, and Willy's booming voice came from the rear of the room: "Why, there's Dr. Dave Smith---he's an expert in cow uteruses." We had a great time, for sure!
Willy was a treasure of a man. Because of his generosity of spirit and caring ways he left this world a better place than he found it, and he left his friends and family as better people for having known him.
RIP dear, dear Willy

I met Bill Mack in 1964. We proudly served our country together for four years on the USS America-CVA-66.
Our flight deck group was special. We worked professionally throughout our stint on 66.
America visited many, many ports of call during that timeframe. So many memories are embedded in my heart-working and sharing fun filled liberty’s with Mack and many other G-division shipmates.
I’m very thankful that Mack called me a couple of weeks ago. We had a wonderful chat.
Rest In Peace Mack. See you on the other side!

We have to add that Willie had the most giving heart. He was always ready to help people in whatever way possible and put his whole heart into it. He came into our lives and gave his whole self into helping our Mom in the most loving and complete way. Her fine life was made better by Willie's hand and his caring. He quickly became everyone's favorite Grandpa in the new neighborhood. We will miss his Navy breakfasts.
It was always astounding to see him walk up to a stranger and find a connection to that person after a short battery of questions. He would reach out and make friends daily. His stories were always grand and sometimes a little variable. Our lives truly were enhanced by Willie being in our family. God bless him and the eternity of all the new friends he will now make in Heaven.

We are heartbroken that you are gone from our lives. From the moment we met you we each knew you were a remarkable person. You made anyone you spoke to you feel special and connected. We will especially miss your smile, your laugh, great Navy breakfasts, doing the dishes with you and your funny/corny FB jokes. We will always love you dearly. Rest in peace sweet Willie.

Willie was a kind, generous and hardworking man who was always there to extend a helping hand. My day was always made better when I would see him and his smiling face say, 'Good Morning Miss, Colleen'. I am honored and privileged to have been given the opportunity to know Willie and call him my friend. His presence will truly be missed by all at Scarano Boat Building. - Colleen Jackson
