Ilion Date Line James Edward Snedeker, affectionately known as "Sned" was born on June 12, 1923 and passed away on January 7, 2015. He was predeceased by his parents Floyd Marin and Florence Ford Snedeker; he was one of 13 children. On January 24, 1948 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Thom, in Ilion. Edward is survived by his wife of 65 years Elizabeth, two daughters and a son in law Janice and Robert Frank of Rochester, NY, and Carol Jayne Snedeker of Rush, NY, two sons Philip Snedeker of Woodridge, IL, and Timothy Snedeker of Brockport, NY; his grandchildren Jessica and Joshua Emery of Newtown, PA, Daniel Frank of Rochester, NY, Samantha Frank of Rochester, NY, Matthew and Shefali Snedeker of Chicago, IL, and Michael Snedeker of Chicago, IL; a brother Guy Snedeker of Ilion, NY, four sisters and two brothers in law Barbara and Bruce Windecker of Fairfield, NY, Carolyn Kennedy of New Samara Beach, FL, Eileen Looman of Herkimer, NY, and Mary Frances and Al Aesch of Broadalbin, NY. Jim also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters Bertha Sokoloski, Agnes Jess Hageman, Gertrude Murray Salsburg, and Donna Okusko; and three brothers Richard, Robert and Raymond Snedeker. James was born Mohawk, raised in Ilion and attended the Ilion High School. During WWII James served in the European Theater. After the war he worked in security at Griffith Air Force in Rome. He then worked on the police force for the Village of Ilion, and then transferred to the Ilion Fire Department, where he retired as Deputy Chief. When he was not working at the Fire Dept. he served his community at the Ilion Moose Lodge, Ilion First United Methodist Church, and the Ilion Public Library, he also drove school bus. James also worked security at Utica Mutual Insurance in Utica. He also volunteered with Catholic Charities. For many years Sned worked with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home in Ilion serving many families. Edward had a small farm in Jordanville where he enjoyed gardening and where many groups would gather for outings and nature walks. These groups included the local Audubon Society, school groups and family members. Ed would often take produce from the farm to Prindle Apartments for the residents to enjoy. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and many acquaintance he made over the years. In keeping with the Jim's wishes there are no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Saturday January 10, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion with Fr. Paul Catena officiating. Interment will be in the Highland Rural Cemetery in Jordanville in the spring. Friends are asked to consider memorials to the Ilion Ambulance Fund, 1 Central Ave. Ilion, NY 13357, the Catholic Charities, 61 West Street Ilion NY 13357 or the Ilion Public Library, 78 West Street Ilion, NY 13357 in Sned's memory.
