Mohawk Nina Lea Sponburgh, 77, of Mohawk passed away on September 2, 2014, in the comfort of her own home and with her loving family by her side, after a courageous battle with Cancer. She was born on April 25, 1937, in Ilion, New York, the daughter of Jessie M. (Edgett) and Lawrence A. Bushie, SR. She was married to Garland Sponburgh on April 27, 1957 for 57 years. They resided in Ilion until 1966 when they moved to Mohawk and built their home, where they currently reside. She stayed home with her children until 1972 when she was employed as an assistant to the Executive Director of the Herkimer Area Resource Center (HARC) until her retirement in 1994. She enjoyed her work and the clients of the HARC, she was very active in the ZONTA Organization, she loved camping in northern New York and was a snow bird in Arizona for several winters, she loved her travels with Garland across the States, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Garland A. Sponburgh, her three children; Gary A. Sponburgh (wife Kim), Gregg A. Sponburgh, and Carin J. Hubbard (husband Steve), 6 grandchildren (Kara (husband Shawn), Renae, Kaylee, Ryan, Breanna, and Gabriella), 1 great grandson (Carter) and Nina's sister, Donna M. Poore. A memorial service for Nina will be held on Saturday September 6, 2014 at 7pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. Dr. Roger Klossner and Pastor Peg Donaghy will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 5pm until the time of the funeral. Donations in Nina's memory may be made to HOSPICE and Palliative Care 4277 Middlesettlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
