Ilion Date Line Suzanne Colburn, age 92, a longtime resident of Ilion, NY passed away at the Folts Home in Herkimer, NY on Saturday April 26, 2014, with her loving family by her side Suzanne was born on December 10, 1021 in Herkimer, NY to the late John and Christina Pollak. She grew up in Herkimer and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1940. After graduating, she immediately began working at Sperry Rand in Ilion. While working there, she met Everett Colburn, a ham radio operator with the U.S. Navy. Shortly after they were married on May 11, 1946 and lived in Ilion for 54 years. During the early years of her marriage, she chose to stay home and raise her four children. In 1968, she decided to return to work at the Remington Arms and worked in the Purchase Parts Department until her retirement in 1984. Following her husband's death in 2007, she lived independently until 2007. She then moved in with her youngest daughter, Patricia. After breaking her hip in 2013, she required greater care and a few months of rehabilitation at the Folts Home. She then became a permanent resident there. Suzanne was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Herkimer, NY, the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Post 920 Auxiliary, the Home Bureau and the Senior Citizens. Suzanne was a loving and giving woman. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to her family, friends, or anyone in need. She was fun-loving and full of life. She could liven up any moment with one of her jokes and her silly antics always made us laugh. Suzanne was most comfortable in the kitchen, where she loved to cook and bake. She will for fondly remembered for all of the holiday dinners and barbecues she prepared. She also loved polka music and taking summer trips to Cape Cod with her daughter's family. Suzanne, lovingly called "Beama" by all those who knew her, will be dearly missed, but her memory will live on in the days to come. Our hearts are broken that she is no longer with us, but we know that we will be reunited with her someday. Those left behind to cherish her memory are her three children, her son James and his wife Judy of Murrieta, California, her daughters Donna Wheat and her husband Brent of Catskill, NY and Patricia Colburn of Ilion, NY and her son in law Dennis Umber of Desert Hills, Arizona. She leaves seven grandchildren, Joshua, Jenny, Courtney, Gillian, Amber, Abraham and Blake. She also leaves five great grandchildren Alyssa, Emilynn, Aspen, Hunter and Mason as well as one on the way. She also leaves a sister in law Marion Pollak, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett, her daughter Karen (Donna's Twin) her brother John Pollak and two sisters Ann Hildebrandt and Kristian Pollak. Suzanne's family would like to extend their gratitude to the Fourth Floor Staff of the Folts Home for their compassion and excellent care. By request of the family, there will be no calling hours.
