Ilion Katherine Emma "Kay" Smith, 76 of Ilion passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Kay was born January 28, 1938 in Ilion, NY. She was the daughter of the late Edwin and Gladys (Beauchemin) Smith. Kay graduated from Annunciation School and Ilion High School, and was employed for many years by Friedrich in Utica, NY. Kay was an avid reader and loved working on handicrafts. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and brought laughter and happiness to her family. She was a devoted sister and aunt who always put her family first. She loved animals and was a friend to stray cats, especially her late companion, Bonkers. Kay is the beloved sister of Eleanor and Buck Riddell of Ilion and Joe Smith of Chadwicks, NY. She is the cherished aunt of Steve Tines (fiancée Amy) of Richfield Springs, NY, Bob Tines of Schoharie, NY, Judith Riddell Schneider (Darin) of St. Louis, MO, Tracy Miller (Rob) of Waxhaw, NC, Scott Riddell (An) of Charlotte, NC, Mary Strafel (Dave) of Matthews, NC, John Miller (Holly) of Charlotte, and Luke Miller of Chapel HIll, NC. Kay was predeceased by her siblings Alfred Smith, Ruth Abbey, Margery Tines, and Frank Smith, and her brothers-in-law Pete Tines and Clifford Abbey. The funeral service will be celebrated at Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home in Ilion on Monday April 14 at 11 AM. Deacon James Bower will officiate. Friends may visit on Monday April 14, 2014 from 10 to 11 am. The interment will take place at Woodgate Cemetery in White Lake, NY, in the spring.
