Ilion Shirley Mae Forbes, 78 of Ilion and Haines City FL, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the St. Luke’s Home in New Hartford. Shirley was born on August 14, 1935 in Ilion, the daughter of the late Walter and Bertha (Bluett) Streeter. She was a graduate of Mohawk Schools, Class of 1953. On December 7, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to Charles “Whitey” Forbes. Shirley worked at Dan Dee Donuts, The Empire Diner, Marcy Psychiatric Center, and retired as a bus driver for Polk Co. Schools. She was a member of the Mohawk Valley Squares, enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, and took pleasure planning weekly dinners with special friends. She kept active walking with neighbors and could often be found on the floor playing with her great-grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her husband Whitey, three sons; Timothy and his wife Cheryl Forbes, James Forbes, and Daniel and his wife Susan Forbes, all of Mohawk. A daughter Nancy and her husband Dennis Baker of Ilion; two sisters Joan and her husband Charles Fink and Carol and her husband Al May, both of FL; twelve grandchildren, Jon Martin, Daniel and Lindsay Forbes, Peter Norwich, Kenneth and Sharon Grose, Michelle Norwich and Cody Connor, Brianna and Adam Silverstein, Christopher and Laura Forbes, Matthew Forbes, Steven Forbes, Andrew Forbes, Kyla Grose, and Nicole Forbes, fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews. Shirley also leaves a special friend Shirley Mead of Mohawk. She is predeceased by a daughter Jamie Baum, a brother Leonard Bernier, and a sister Geraldine Phillips. Friends may call on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 4-7pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. A service of remembrance will be held at 7pm.
