Mohawk Betty Jean Sterling, 79 of Walnut St. in Mohawk, passed away on Friday April 26, 2013 at Valley Health Service in Herkimer. Jean was born on May 28, 1933 in Ilion the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Charbonneau) Evans, she was a secretary and reading aid for the Mohawk Schools until her retirement. On July 19, 1952 Jean married Charles Sterling. Jean was a member of the Paines Hollow Methodist Church where she was Superintendent, Treasurer and teacher of Sunday school. Jean was active in the Home Bureau and was a former Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader; she enjoyed taking care of children. Jean is survived by her husband Charles; two sons Keith and his wife Janet and Kevin and his wife Terri; two daughters Kathleen and her husband Bill Loomis and Kolleen and her husband Ken Rice; two sisters Mary and her husband Dave Rankins and Nancy and her husband Earl Pratt. She also leaves her grandchildren Michelle, Michael, Chad, Samantha, Kasandra, Paul, Kelly, Jim, Rachel, Matthew and Marshall and her great grandchildren; Craig Joseph, Brandon, Andrew, Julia and Lilly. She also leaves a special friend Seth. Jean is pre deceased by a brother Robert and two great grandchildren Aiden and Benjamin. A memorial service for Jean will be held on Saturday May 4, 2013 at noon at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. Liz Harter and Dr. Roger Klossner will officiate; interment will be in the Mohawk Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday May 3, 2013 from 5-7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers friends are asked to consider memorial donations to Valley Health Services, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
