Ilion Shirley Murphy, 83, formerly of 80 East North Street Ilion passed away Sunday May 1, 2011 at the Folt's Home in Herkimer. She was born on October 25, 1927 in Utica, the daughter of the late John and Helen (Shepard) Hailston. On April 2, 1949 Shirley was united in marriage to John Murphy in Pennsylvania He passed away on December 24, 1997. She was educated in Frankfort and Ilion Schools. Throughout her life Shirley worked as a clerk for Freeman's Clothing store, UNIVAC and Duofold, retiring many years ago. She enjoyed time with her family and her many friends and activities at Prindle Apartments. Shirley is survived by her sons and daughter in law Timothy Murphy of Ballston Lake and Michael and Jill Murphy of Warren, RI, her daughters and sons in law Colleen and Garry Cook of Ilion, Cynthia Dennis of Clarence, NY and Kelly and Keith Herringshaw of Taylors, SC; daughter in law Kathy Murphy of Ilion; a step sister and brother in law Beverly and Ray Garlock of Mohawk; a step brother and sister in law Tom and Ann Shepard of NC; a brother and sister in law Edward and Nancy Murphy of Ilion; a sister in law Anna Murphy of Ballston Spa, NY; grandchildren, Stephen Cook, Shaun Cook, Karen (Pat) Romeo, Kimberly (Paul) Passionino, Katie Murphy, Krissy Murphy, Jennifer (Pierre) Timot, Jonathan Dennis, Caroline Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Alexis Herringshaw and Lindsay Herringshaw and great grandchildren Grace Romeo, Michael Romeo, Ava Passionino, Gabriel Timot and Colin Cook; also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David Murphy, and her brother George "Roy" Hailston, both of Ilion. The family extends a special thank you to her "adopted" daughters, Kathy Murphy and Connie Hacker, and to the staff at the Folt's Home 1st floor rehab unit for the time and extraordinary care given to Shirley in her last days. In keeping with Shirley's wishes there are no calling hours and funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
