Ilion - Dorothy Slocum, 94, of Ilion, passed away in Valley Health Services on Thursday, September 30, 2021 with her loving family by her side.  Dot was born in Ilion on February 23, 1927, the daughter of the late H. Stewart and Ellen Footherape Fay. She attended and graduated from Ilion Schools and went on to attend the Utica Business School. She was married to William Slocum in Ilion on October 16, 1945. The two shared a blessed union of 68 years until William's passing on November 29, 2013.  Dot was employed with the Herkimer County Treasurer’s Office and later with Oneida National Bank in Ilion. Bill and Dot enjoyed over 30 years of retirement. Time was spent traveling, camping, snowmobiling, bowling, and golfing. They lived at Kayuta Lake, Cedar Lake Golf and Country Club, and Smith Lake Shores, FL before returning to Ilion to reside near family. She is survived by one son, Allan Slocum and his wife, Karen of Wakeforest, NC; one daughter, Margaret and her husband Charles Haggerty of Herkimer; 8 grandchildren, Michele Slocum, Amy Leventry, Alexis Ripley-Slocum, Derek Brewer and Mouna Leder, Devon and Rick Rappa, Chas and Jamie Haggerty, Cory Haggerty and Caitlin Haggerty; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dot was preceded in death by one grandson, Beau Ripley; her siblings, Margaret Ainslie, Robert Fay and William Fay and her in-laws, Audrey Sorenson and Patty Esford. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:00 AM in St. Augustine's Episcopal Church 78 Second St., Ilion, where a funeral service will be celebrated by Deacon Wally Plock. Calling hours will be held Saturday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of services in St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of her family in Oak Hill Cemetery in Herkimer. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. Ilion, NY 13357. Dot's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Nurses and Staff of Valley Health Services, Second Floor East especially Nicole, Lindsay, Alysha, Trent and Danielle for the care and kindness shown to her during her time at VHS. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy's memory may be made to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 78 Second St. Ilion, NY 13357.
