Herkimer Richard J. Fikes, 88, of Herkimer passed away of natural causes on February 2, 2021 at the Foltsbrook Center in Herkimer, NY. Dick was born on September 19, 1932 in Theresa, NY. He was the son of, the late Marion (Cobey) Collins. He was a graduate of Alexandria Bay schools. Following graduation, he served in the US Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict, after which he was honorably discharged. He worked as a machinist at Chicago Pneumatic, retiring in 1997. On May 12, 1978 he married the former Diane J. King in Ilion, NY. Diane passed away on August 8, 2018. Dick had been a past member of the East Herkimer Fire Dept. He was a lifetime member of The American Legion, serving several roles including the Past Commander of Post #38, Herkimer, NY and Past County Commander of Herkimer County. He enjoyed being a State Delegate for the legion for many years. Additionally, he was a proud and notable member of the Herkimer County 40&8, again serving many roles and capacities, including the caretaker of the “Loci” for many years. Richard is survived his daughter Patti and her husband Stephen. He also has a sister Mary Collins and a brother David Collins who predeceases him. Due to Dick’s wishes and the COVID 19 pandemic, there will be no public calling hours. A service will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer. Patti and her husband Stephen would like to extend the warmest and heartfelt gratitude to the staff on the 2nd floor at Foltsbrook Center for their care, compassion and attention to Dad for all of his time there.
