Ilion Ruth E. Sherman 93, of Ilion, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Grand in Ilion. Ruth was born on May 17, 1927 in Oneonta, the daughter of the late, George and Myrtle (Scofield) Norton Sr. She was a graduate of Ilion schools and worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Elizabeth's in Utica. On November 20, 1948 she was united in marriage to Meryl Smith, he passed away in 1996. Ruth then married Russell "Red" Sherman in January of 2000, he passed away in 2017. Ruth loved gardening, knitting, quilting, and doing arts and crafts for the family. She also loved traveling, spending summer at camp, be it on Kayuta or Canadarago Lake. She also enjoyed getting together with the "Upper Otsego St. Card Club". Over the years she was active with the dog census, worked with the Board of Elections and taught Sunday School. Ruth is survived by her daughters Janis and her husband Sam Colombo of Ilion and Jill and her husband Phillip Vale of Webster; five grandchildren Matthew Colombo, Jennifer Kau, Jason and Justin Vale and Nancy Radcliff; seven great grandchildren; a step son Ric and his wife Jill Sherman; three step grandchildren and great grandchildren all of Alabama and a special sister-in-law Jean Smith of Ilion. She is predeceased by a son Meryl Jr. a brother George Jr. and a sister Shirley Decker. In keeping with Ruth's wishes a graveside service will be held in the spring at Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion.
