Louis Edward Sheffield Ilion, New York Louis Edward Sheffield, 83, of Ilion, New York passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center in New Hartford, New York after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving family was by his side. He was born June 26, 1926 in Ilion, New York son of the late Frank and Anne Sheffield. Lou was a 1943 graduate of Ilion High School. Like many boys his age, in 1944 he entered active service for his country during World War II. Louis E. Sheffield He served the United States in the 3010th Army Air Force Base Unit and was stationed in Kingman, Arizona and Camp Bullis, Texas where he trained as a waist gunner in the B-17 Flying Fortress, a plane he loved throughout his entire life. In 1946, Private First Class Louis Edward Sheffield left the United States Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was honored with the American Campaign Medal as well as the World War II Victory Medal for service to his country. Afterwards he went on to Valparaiso Technical Institute in Valparaiso, Indiana and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Radio Engineering. On October 9, 1948, Louis was married to Donna McPherson in Ilion, New York at the Church of the Annunciation. This was the first great building block in what eventually would become the extended Sheffield family and a marriage lasting 61 years. Lou's career began at General Electric in 1948 in Syracuse and then in 1950 he did troubleshooting on the relatively new televisions at Bill's Radio & TV in Ilion. In 1955 he rejoined General Electric, this time in Utica where he remained for the next 34 years, retiring in 1989. Lou was responsible for the electrical designs of several different walkie talkies, radios and stereo clock radios while at GE. His hobbies included a passion for ham radio (as "K2LFL") golf, bowling, swing music (particularly Benny Goodman) and watching the New York Yankees on TV. Louis was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Anne Sheffield, his brother Frank, his sister Louise Young and a great granddaughter Lorrabelle DiMaria. He is survived by his greatly beloved wife of 61 years, Donna Maria Sheffield and his six treasured children and spouses - daughters Dalemarie & Frank DiMaria, Susan & Michael Zaccaria, and his sons Mark & Sonia Sheffield, Louis & Patricia Sheffield, Daniel & Sherry Sheffield and Matthew Sheffield. Lou and Donna were blessed with 14 grandchildren, Frank & Amy DiMaria, Carrie DiMaria, Catherine & Ben Hebert, Michael & Kim Zaccaria, Amy & Lou Diamond, Becky & Michael Knutson, Scott, Emily, Eric Sheffield, Elizabeth & Justin Tsuchida, Genevieve, Bernadette Dominique Sheffield, Gregory Sheffield and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law who were very close to him - Vernon & Emily McPherson, Vaughn & Emily McPherson as well as lifelong friends Bill & Dorothy Slocum and Audrey Sorenson. Louis's family extend their most sincere appreciation to the attentive and dedicated nurses and staff at the Allen Calder Two west wing, Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, Dr. Kachare and the Ilion Fire Department for their efforts at the end of his life. Contributions may be made to the Ilion Fire Department and the American Cancer Society. Friends may call on Wednesday June 2, 2010 from 3-6pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. Ilion. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday June 3, 2010 at 10 am AT THE FUNERAL HOME, with Fr, Ronald Gagnon officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Herkimer.
