Mohawk Matthew J. Mika, 92, of Mohawk, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Little Falls Hospital. Matthew was born on May 28, 1919, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Borce) Mika. He was educated in Poland and worked as a cook in New York City and owned and operated a dairy farm in Paines Hollow for more than 25 years. In 1948 he was married to the former Helen Bonkowski. She passed away on March 12, 2009. Matthew enjoyed living in the country, taking drives in his Cadillac and learning to speak Spanish. He enjoyed visits from longtime friends from New York City. It was important to spend time with his family and a day wouldn't pass without a call or visit from his sons, Mitchell and Mark. Matthew is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Mitchell and Mary of Mohawk and Mark and his fiance, Sabrina Weller of Mohawk, a brother, Chester Mika of Poland, Europe. He also has seven grandchildren, Maryann Mika of Sidney, Michele and Andrew Woodward of Lowville, Mitchell and Kayla Mika of Mohawk, Marlana and Jason Hutchinson of Mohawk, Melissa and Mark Penz of Little Falls, Miranda and Chris Meinzer of Ilion and Ali Mika of Ilion. Matthew also leaves nine great-grandchildren, Cory, Caitlynn, Audrey, Dylan, Ava, Cameron, Mason, Medisyn and Emma. Funeral services for Matthew will be held on Tuesday October 11, 2011 at 11:00am. at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk with Fr. Mark Cunningham officiating, assisted by Sr. Mary Jo Tallman. Interment will follow in the Highland Rural Cemetery in Jordanville. Friends may call on Monday October 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego Street, in Ilion. Matthew's family would like to thank the 3rd floor nurses at Little Falls Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Matthew during his illness.
