Ilion - Ohio Date Line Vivian (Pat) Wright, 98, formerly of Ilion, New York, passed away Tuesday morning, May 31st at Cypress Point Nursing Home in Englewood, Ohio. She was born on June 16, 1912 in Mt. Vernon, New York, the daughter of Lottie and Ranson Caygill. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1933, Pat came to Ilion to teach high school English. On New Year's Day in 1942 she was married to Leonard Wright in St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. After nine and a half years of teaching, Vivian enlisted in the Army on February 11, 1943. After basic training she was transferred to the Women's Air Corps where she was assigned to the Flight Engineers' School for B-29's. The Flight Engineers' School was eventually moved to Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado where Vivian spent most of her time in the service. She was discharged in December of 1945. After the war, Vivian worked in the Unemployment Insurance Office in Little Falls. She returned to Ilion High School in 1958 and taught 4 more years of English until she completed her certification in guidance and worked as a counselor. In 1966 Vivian became Guidance Director at West Canada Valley Central School until retirement in 1979. Vivian had a wide range of interests. Nationally, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Theta Sigma Phi, and the Women's National Honorary Journalism Society. Vivian was a member of the St. Augustine's Church and was involved in the former Travelers' and Shakespeare Clubs. For over 70 years she enjoyed participating in Little Theater Club plays and activities. Vivian was an avid reader and bridge player. The Wrights' spent many memorable summers at Cedar Lake, swimming, golfing and partying with friends. Vivian loved to travel and planned numerous trips through Europe and the United States. She was blessed with many caring friends and neighbors that made it possible for her to enjoy her home in Ilion for many years. Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Leonard. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Whipple, of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a son, John Wright and his wife, Vicki, of Vandalia, OH; a granddaughter, Kendall, and her finance, Adam Stanley of Columbus, OH; a grandson, Bryan Wright of Vandalia, OH; and a niece, Suzanne Hawe of NYC, N.Y. In keeping with Mrs. Wright's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Following the church service, burial will take place at the Cherry Valley Cemetery. Friends are asked to consider memorials to the Ilion Public Library, Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
