Mohawk Horace M. "Stoney" Stone, 86 formerly of McKoons Rd., passed away on Monday May 30, 2011 at Mohawk Valley Health Care in Ilion. Stoney was born on August 25, 1924 in Mohawk the son of the late Silih and Fannie (McGuiness) Stone. He was educated in Mohawk Schools and on October 30, 1943 he married the former Mildred Sturgess, she passed away on July 24, 2008. Stoney served in the US Army and was employed at the Ilion High School as a janitor and then at the Ilion Post Office until his retirement in 1988. Stoney lived and breathed the Boy Scouts where he served as leader of the Cub Pack and Troop 8, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting and was awarded a Commemorative Stamp at Camp Russell for all of his work in Scouting, he enjoyed camping at Camp Russell with family and his Scouts. Stoney was also a volunteer at MVNH and was an MYF leader for years. He was a member of the Mohawk Reformed church. Stoney is survived by his children William and his wife Debra of Kentucky, Paul of Ilion, Brian and his wife Mary of Columbia Ctr., Kathleen Bryden of Voorhesville, Eileen and her husband Charles French of Columbia Ctr. and Susan and her husband Alan Tayler of Ilion. A brother Norman and his wife Marilyn of Mohawk. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was pre deceased by a son Daniel in 1968, his brothers Bruce, Max, Graham and Gerald and a sister Fran Perry. Funeral services for Stoney will be held on Saturday June 4, 2011 at 11am at the Mohawk Reformed Church, Pastor Brian Engle will officiate, interment will be in Mt. View Memorial Gardens in the Tn. of Little Falls. Friends may call on Friday from 11am to 1pm and 5 to 7pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion; and from 10 to 11am at the church. Friends are asked to consider memorial donations to the Camp Russell Alumni Association 1401 Genesee St. Utica, NY 13501 and envelopes are available at the funeral home. Stoney's family wish to thank the 3rd floor staff at Mohawk Valley Health Care for the compassion shown to Stoney and his family; also to the people who contributed to Stoney's Facebook wall.
